Where your rating actually sits

Average rating is the mean of your match ratings, so it says how consistent you are rather than how good your best night was. The table reads in the direction people care about: find your rating on the right, and the left column is the share of players you are ahead of.

So is 7.0 good?

No. The median archived player averages 7.33, so a 7.0 sits below half the players measured here. The advice everybody repeats is not a high bar — it is slightly under average.

The top one per cent of archived players hold 9.21. Very few people are there, and most of them have played hundreds of games, which is the part worth noticing: a high rating over a long run is a different achievement from a high rating over five matches.

Do not compare a keeper to a striker

Ratings are not comparable across positions, and this is the part that ruins most squad arguments. Measured across archived players, the average rating by the position actually played:

A goalkeeper on the same rating as a forward has had a far better season. Judging the two on one number is the most common mistake made with this stat.

What moves it

EA does not publish the formula, and anyone who tells you they know it is guessing. What is observable is that goals are not the whole of it — passing, tackling and time on the ball all count, which is why a defender who never scores can still rate above a forward who does. Playing your position properly rates better than chasing the ball.
